Brunswick's Bronze Lion
The Brunswick Lion is the city's emblem. In 1166, Brunswick's ruler, Henry the Lion, ordered a bronze lion to be placed at the heart of the city as a symbol of his power and jurisdiction. The original statue was the first of its kind to be built in Northern Europe and can be viewed today in Dankwarderode Castle. An exact replica thereof was placed in the courtyard in the 1980s.

Henry the Lion's Book of Gospels
This outstanding specimen of Romanesque book illumination was commissioned by Brunswick's ruler Henry and his wife Mathilde some time before 1188. It was completed at the Benedictine monastery in Heimarshausen. It is an impressive documentation of Henry's political ambitions to become one of the most powerful rulers of the period. The book was preserved in Brunswick for a long time but is now kept on display in Wolfenbuettel's Herzog August Library.
