| Regional Institutions There are a number of regional institutions which, in addition to fulfilling the tasks and responsibilities specifically linked with this region, are also active in enhancing its development. |

The area known as Brunswick and surroundings includes the boroughs of Brunswick and Salzgitter as well as the municipal districts of Helmstedt, Peine and Wolfenbuettel. It was founded in 1990, when the communities of the association were looking for a means to document their common historical roots. The association covers an area which used to form the heart of the old 'State of Brunswick'. The communities have been joining forces to support efforts for preserving the area's heritage and for helping create a sense of belonging. Founded in 1993, the Deuregio Ostfalen is a registered association. It incorporates the municipal districts of Boerdekreis and Ohrekreis in the federal state of Sachsen-Anhalt as well as the municipal district of Helmstedt. The aims of the association are to nurture a sense of regional belonging and to improve the living conditions on a communal level. |

There are two chambers of industry and commerce in the Brunswick region. The Brunswick 'Chamber of Industry and Commerce' includes the cities of Brunswick and Salzgitter as well as the municipal districts of Helmstedt, Goslar, Peine and Wolfenbuettel. The 'Chamber of Industry and Commerce Lueneburg-Wolfsburg', main office Wolfsburg is responsible for the town of Wolfsburg and the municipal district of Gifhorn. | Regionalverband Harz (association for the Harz region) |

Whole regions in Germany were formerly divided by inner German boundaries. This division was especially transparent in the Harz region, where there is a large, concentrated area of natural beauty and cultural richness. Shortly after the reunification of Germany, it became evident that it would require concerted efforts to recover from past regional divisions. In 1992, nine districts from the Harz region, belonging to Lower Saxony, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thueringen founded the Regionalverband Harz e.V.. Their goal is to strengthen the co-operation between all the most important bodies and institutions in the Harz region. |

| Integrated Regional Transport Association for the Braunschweig Region |

|
On 1 November, 1998 a passenger-friendly public transport tariff came into force for the entire region. The tariff has since been introduced by eleven transport operators in the region, including the Deutsche Bahn AG, and 'Zweckverband Grossraum Braunschweig'. |

This association is an umbrella for all the municipal districts and boroughs in the Brunswick region. It is responsible for regional planning and measures affecting areas beyond the scope of a single association. It therefore has the responsibilities of a sub-department to Lower Saxony's planning authority. What's more, it is the main body for public road and rail transport. |
