History in the Heart of the City The Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum is the only historical museum that is fianced mainly by the government of Lower Saxony. It presents the history of the former Dukedom Braunschweig from its early beginnings until today. The Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum is one of the largest historical museums in Germany. Apart from the exhibition in the main building at the Burgplatz there are presentations of Jewish life at the exhibition centre »Hinter Aegidien«, of early and ancient history in Wolfenbüttel, Kanzleistr.3 and agricultural life at the Bauernhausmuseum in Bortfeld. As you see, there are many opportunities to discover the history of the region of Braunschweig.

Duke Anton Ulrich Museum

This museum, one of the oldest art museums on the European continent, houses Germany's fourth largest collection of paintings by old Dutch masters as well as sculptures and crafts from ancient to recent times. There is also a collection of impressive etchings from the Middle Ages to the present day. The museum's Department of Medieval Art can be found at Burgplatz (the castle courtyard) in the heart of the city in Dankwarderode Castle (built in the 12th century for Brunswick's Henry the Lion, it was reconstructed in the late 19th century).

The Municipal Museum is one of the most important community museums of cultural history with its extensive collections on the subject of Brunswick art and cultural history. The largest collection of Brunswick Lacquework is located here.

Natural History Museum

Brunswick's Natural History Museum is a national museum and the oldest of its kind in the world (1754).
Vivid displays about the surrounding region, its landscapes and animal kingdoms, as well as an aquarium, a bird room, an insect room with a chance to observe a beehive and the new fossil room (opened autumn 1999) provide fascinating viewing. With the museum's comprehensive educational programme, there is a chance for both young and old to embark on a journey of discovery.

The Museum für Photographie Braunschweig was found in 1984. It presents an unique forum concerning the presentation of photography and a lot of attention is paid to the exhibition programme.
