Border Zone Museum
 |
This project is concerned with documenting and presenting both the division and the ultimate reunification of Germany. The project shows how physical as well as ideological boundaries were overcome peacefully.
The museum's impressive exhibition is a reminder of the days after the Second World War when borders and boundaries led people to attempt escape. It was a time of expulsion as well as a time when the Helmstedt-Marienborn border-crossing was of international importance for industry, trade and traffic. It is a reminder of how border policing used to be an everyday occurrence as well as a reminder of how the Wall fell in 1989. It is also a presentation of "frontier art" – from concrete to abstract – with interpretations by artists from both east and west of the border, and their thoughts before and after the fall of the Wall.

Koenigslutter Kaiserdom Museum
 |
This cathedral in the town of Koenigslutter is the work of famous masons from Lombardy which, at that time, was quite unusual in Germany. The Abbot's house and the cloisters – one of the most beautiful specimens of Romanesque architecture in Germany – as well as the refectory are what remain of the former Benedictine monastery. Close by you will find the Kaiserdom Museum which includes an authentic workers' hut where there are vivid accounts of the background to the cathedral and its architect.

Convent of St Marienberg
 |
Founded in 1176 and formerly Augustinian, St Marienberg is today an Evangelical convent. Among its special features is a Romanesque buttressed basilica and a collection of medieval cloths and robes. It has been an important centre for textile arts and crafts since the Middle Ages (and particulary in the 19th century).
Textiles are still produced here in the traditional way, especially in the nearby workshop (founded 1862), supported by the Veltheim Fund. Restoration of sacred fabrics is carried out according to medieval traditions. High quality fabrics are produced for religious as well as for secular use: liturgical cloths and gowns, tapestries etc. Restorations take place with a view to their museum value with special training for craftsmen in embroidery and weaving.
