Municipal Museum and Art Gallery
 |
The Municipal Museum and Art Gallery in Schloss Salder store a wealth of information about the area's eventful past. Prehistorical and ancient findings, for instance, illustrate how mining and the processing of metals would later influence Salzgitter's development. The museum also houses reminders of how prisoners in concentration camps suffered at the hands of growing industrialisation and National Socialism during the Second World War. It recalls the fates of refugees fleeing their homeland on the other side of the rivers Oder and Neisse. It documents the struggle that took place to maintain the factories and an iron will on the part of the locals to rebuild the city at the end of the 1940s. These events are enhanced by pictures and sculptures in the main building of the museum. They are the work of different artists from home and abroad working in different media. Be sure not to miss the exhibition of agricultural machinery which is impressive in the way it retraces the city's history to its agricultural origins.
